The Comedian PHD Blog

Robb Wolf at Suny

March 7th, 2012

Ok, cha cha cha, I’m back.  Took a couple of weeks unblogging as I re-ramped up my comedy writing/teaching biz.  Seriously, sometimes I have so many irons in the fire I look like a pro smelter.  And, yes, smelting, one of the more versatile verbs ever.  Smelt ranges in meaning from species of small fishes, to the extraction of base metals from ores, to a fart-identifing term for rednecks.  That is range.

Wanted to give a link shout-out to Robb Wolf’s recent talk at Suny on “Evolutionary Darwinism.”  This guy is so cyber-generous — free blogs, podcasts, lectures, full not of rambling, but seriously strong content — I was absolutely thrilled to buy his book, which means I gave him probably $2 bucks (after publisher money-leeching).  I seriously can’t put a dollar figure on how much his information has allowed me to make super-changes in my life.  When I get incredibly gold-laden in the perfect mythical financial utopia that is to come, I’ll walk up and slap him in the head with a wad of cash equal to grad school tuition, because he has earned it.

For a communication person like myself, guys like Robb are fascinating figures to watch as we experience the emergence of a New Land of Communication.  The idea of free, high-quality content distributed over the Internet, that then creates a swirl of activity and community around it, and enacts real life change across literally a world where geographic borders are insignificant — that’s sincerely amazing.  It holds out the possibility that we can efficiently create effective change in massive institutions and cultural power foundations, in effect, an Arab Spring in many different human life-areas — in the case of Paleo approaches, this means changes in Big Nutrition, Big Medicine, Big Food, Big Sickness, etc.  In other areas, it might soon mean we can create a government forced to be so responsive to the people, not allowed to hide and corrupt the process with dis-communication, that we might actually grow a government for the people, by the people.  P’haps.  We’ll see.

But in the interim as we smelt some honest change from the political process, Paleo is such a cool phenomenon to watch, and try to figure out how I might fit into it as a comedian, a rhetorician/communication theorist, and a general thinking person and working-classer who has always believed in helping entire communities, not just those who are profiting off entire communities.  It’s exciting to see how I can get involved in spreading this stuff to others, to my family, friends, and really, anyone who can benefit from some new information that can help them ditch the stuff that’s been hidden and undercutting their health in so many ways.

Fun stuff.

I Can Cook a Bit

February 15th, 2012

It’s hard to sometimes look back and realize how much change gone through whenever you’ve gone through change.  The new stuff becomes standard, and the old stuff seems so far back you don’t really remember it being that way.

Thus, I’m sitting here eating a Thai Cocoanut Milk soup — that I made.  And over in the crock pot is simmering an all-day bone broth that I’ll use for a bunch of other flavorings in this and that.

For those who cook cook, none of what I’m doing adds up to much .  But for the guy who sat with his kids wondering burgers or grilled cheese, noodles or full-on spaghetti — this is pretty awesome.  And the soup is even edible.

Whoosh.  I am in my own future.
